The antioxidant function of many animal pigments: are there consistent health benefits of sexually selected colourants?

چکیده
Several classes of pigments impart flamboyant colours on animals, including the red, orange and yellow carotenoids. Carotenoid-based colours have served as ideal models for studying the honesty-reinforcing mechanisms underlying sexually selected traits, because the very pigments used to become colourful also have antioxidant and immunoregulatory properties that allow individuals to signal their superior health to prospective mates. It is unclear, however, whether other chemical colourants in animals confer similar physiological benefits. Here I make the observation that the other major groups of animal pigments, including melanins, pterins, porphyrins, psittacofulvins and flavonoids, also exhibit antioxidant activity in living systems. Thus, many types of pigment-based colour ornaments in animals have the potential to honestly reveal health state via the immunomodulatory action of the pigments themselves. To evaluate this hypothesis, the extent to which these sets of pigments serve antioxidant functions in colourful animals and to which animals face a trade-off shunting pigments to physiological functions versus colour displays should be investigated.

This research aimed to compare the effects of pigments extracted from dried petal meal of marigold flower and synthetic pigments on productive performance of laying hens, egg quality and antioxidant properties of the egg. A total of 64 laying hens, aged 75 weeks, were distributed in a completely randomized design in 4 treatments and 4 replications containing 4 hens per cages. Experimental group...

متن کاملPhycocyanin, cyanobacterial antioxidant: structure, function and applications
Phycobilins, open-chain tetrapyrrole pigment molecules, serve as accessory photosynthetic light-harvesting pigments in red algae and cyanobacteria. Phycobilin pigments are covalently linked with proteins and formed phycobiliproteins are organized into large macromolecular complexes called phycobilisomes on the top of the thylakoid membranes. In deep water, only green light is available, thus ph...
متن کاملCarotenoids as food colourants.
INTRODUCTION Carotenoids are one of the most important groups of natural pigments. It has been estimated that nature produces about 100 million tons of these pigments per year. They give brilliant yellow and red colours to many fruits, vegetables, roots, flowers and autumn leaves; they produce the colour of the egg yolk, of many algae, yeasts and mushrooms, Crustaceae as well as of the feathers...
